A Little Introduction to Veganuary
The holidays are over, the new year has begun, and so has Veganuary!
In recent years, the month of January has become synonymous with trying out a vegan lifestyle for a month. Similar to ‘No-Shave November’, which draws attention to cancer prevention, Veganuary has been created for a good cause: promoting cruelty-free and plant-based swaps in our usually animal product-filled diet.
Originally created by Jane Land and Matthew Glover in late 2013, Veganuary is now a non-profit organisation educating people about the vegan lifestyle. After the guaranteed end-of-December food coma caused by various holidays, trying a vegan diet is a great way to get a head start on those new year’s resolutions, especially for all those who love food but also want to try healthier and more sustainable alternatives.
There’s definitely something about scouring the supermarket in search of new products, discovering new recipes and knowing that no animal has to suffer for the food you’re eating for the whole of January. And the good thing: if you don’t feel like it, you can stop! That’s the wonderful thing about ‘trying’ – if it’s not for you, there’s no pressure to continue. But even if you find yourself unable to let go of scrambled eggs and sausages in the morning, or a good box of fried chicken after a night out – some of the vegan alternatives you discover during Veganuary will stick with you, and you’ll already be doing something good for the animals – and the planet – by swapping some of your favourites by delicious plant-based alternatives.
And you won’t be alone! Veganuary is growing fast: In 2020, more than 400 000 people took part in Veganuary – that’s 400 000 people not eating any animal products in January 2020!
